SALT LAKE CITY — A young child was hit by an SUV and killed Thursday in Salt Lake City, police said.

About 6 p.m., officers responded to the crash near 350 E. Wilson Ave. and found a "very young child" who had critical, life-threatening injuries, Salt Lake City police spokesman Brent Weisberg said.

First responders immediately began lifesaving efforts, but the child died at the hospital.

Based on preliminary investigation, police believe the SUV was moving slowly, and the driver was loading up his car when the child was hit at a slow speed, Weisberg said. The crash happened in a driveway.

The driver is related to the child and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Wilson Avenue is expected to remain closed between 300 East and 400 East for several hours during the investigation.
