SALT LAKE CITY — A police task force seized 4,800 fentanyl pills from a Honduran man as part of an undercover operation and arrested the man for investigation of drug trafficking.

The Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force began an investigation into narcotics distribution in May after learning of an alleged supplier of fentanyl pills, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed with Utah's 3rd District Court.

An undercover agent met with a man, later identified as Miguel Angel Mencia Banegas, 24. Banegas handed the agent "a fast food bag containing fentanyl pills," according to the affidavit. The bag contained about 3,300 pills, police said. He was arrested shortly thereafter, on Monday, for suspicion of trafficking fentanyl.

Banegas told police there were another 1,000 pills at his residence. After obtaining a search warrant, another 1,500 pills were found at Banegas's residence.

In total, "approximately 4,800 fentanyl pills were seized." Banegas also told police he was in the U.S. illegally and is from Honduras, the affidavit states.
