SALT LAKE CITY — No injuries were reported after a natural gas explosion shook several buildings near North Temple early Monday, according to Salt Lake City fire officials.
An explosion was reported at a convenience store near 1700 West and North Temple about 3:15 a.m., according to Salt Lake Fire Division Chief Bob Silverthorne. Several windows were blown out and there was structural damage to the building, which houses an Extra Mile convenience store, Subway restaurant and China Delight Restaurant.
No employees of the businesses appear to have been in the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Utilities were shut off in the area and there is "no known risk to the community," police said in a social media post.
An employee of the restaurant said she was supposed to start work shortly after the explosion and could hear the blast from her home, just a few blocks away.
"I talked to one of the officers who told me that there has been an explosion here on the property," Orlana Slim, an Extra Mile employee, told KSL-TV. She said she was glad the explosion happened before she got there.
The full scope of damage is still being assessed, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the explosion.
