OGDEN — A 17-year-old boy who was airlifted to a hospital Saturday evening after nearly drowning in the Weber River has died, police say.
The teen's death was confirmed by the Weber County Sheriff's Office on Sunday, but further details about the drowning or when the boy died were not given.
At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office received a 911 call about a possible drowning in the Weber River. Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Sean Endsley said a group of boys were playing with airsoft guns in the area when two of them went into the river, and only one boy resurfaced.
After about 90 minutes of searching, Endsley said that search and rescue crews found the second boy in the river. The teen was retrieved from the water and flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he died.
Endsley said it's not clear why the teen wasn't able to come out of the water like his friend, but the river was running swiftly at the time, and that could have been a factor.
Correction: A previous version incorrectly stated that Lt. Sean Endsley works for the Ogden Police Department instead of the Weber County Sheriff's Office.
