PLEASANT GROVE — The 9-year-old boy hit by a truck and killed on a Pleasant Grove street on Tuesday has been identified as Dalton Gibbs.

A Go Fund Me account* launched to raise funds for Dalton's family identified him and said the boy was riding his bike when hit by the vehicle.

"His sudden and unexpected passing has left his family, friends and community in unimaginable grief," it reads. "Dalton was a light in the lives of everyone who knew him. He was full of laughter, curiosity and kindness. He brought joy wherever he went and had a heart as big as his smile."

Pleasant Grove Police Sgt. Derick Shumway said the boy was crossing 2600 North at 900 West about 4 p.m. when he was hit by a truck turning at a stop sign. The driver was taken into police custody after leaving the scene.

First responders administered first aid to Dalton before he was transported to the hospital, but Shumway said the boy died shortly after arriving there.

"(It's) a big tragedy for us; something none of us want to respond to," Shumway said. "Our hearts go out to the families and the witnesses and everybody that was involved, really."

Investigators spoke with witnesses and located videos to help them identify the vehicle involved as a white, four-door Chevy truck with a handicap placard; its driver, they learned, was a man in his 80s.

Police said the man was located Tuesday night and taken in for questioning, but they did not release his name. Investigators are working to determine what may have caused him to hit the boy.

The Go Fund Me account seeks donations to assist Dalton's family in covering funeral costs and other expenses.
