SALT LAKE CITY — A Texas man was sentenced Tuesday to more than 11 years in prison for traveling to Utah to sexually abuse a 12-year-old.

Carl William Wyckoff, 25, of New Boston, Texas, pleaded guilty in November 2024 to transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. He was charged with coercion and enticement of a minor and transfer of obscenity to a minor but through a plea deal was only convicted of the transportation charge.

Wyckoff was exchanging sexual messages with a 12-year-old girl he met playing an online game, including exchanging pictures, court documents said. Wyckoff initially believed the child was an adult, but after learning her age, he continued exchanging explicit messages with her, the court documents say.

Wyckoff admitted that between April 13 and April 15 last year, he traveled from Texas to Arizona, then transported the minor to Utah, where he engaged in sexual activity with her, according to the plea agreement.

He was sentenced by a federal court to 135 months in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
