SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Hockey Club picked up 4 critical points in the standings over a three-game road trip with overtime wins over Columbus and Washington.

The loss, a forgettable 7-3 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes, may have actually set the stage for a dramatic storyline in the nation's capital.

After giving up six goals against Carolina, Utah's Karel Vejmelka was called into action after an injury to Connor Ingram on Sunday, and ended up carrying the Hockey Club to a victory. SLC Puck host Austin Facer, who called Sunday's game "a scheduled loss" beforehand, was shocked at the outcome.

Now, the NHL will break for its midseason international tournament, the 4 Nations Face Off. With Utah still in the mix for a wildcard spot in the playoffs, Facer wonders if now is the time for the team to make a move ahead of a push for the postseason.

SLC Puck! is a twice-weekly podcast on Utah's hockey scene hosted by local hockey expert Austin Facer. You can subscribe to SLC Puck's YouTube channel here. Facer also co-hosts the NashCast, the Utah Hockey Club's alt-cast starring NHL funnyman Tyson Nash, available exclusively on SEG+ or Utah HC+.
