On this day after the day when people the world over exchange presents may we suggest a gift that is desperately needed in our modern world - the gift of honesty.
Sadly, we've been witnessing far too many examples of the opposite - of dishonesty:
-A governor of a major state is hauled off in handcuffs, accused of extortion.
-A noted Wall Street veteran is arrested for allegedly operating a giant Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of billions of dollars.
-A reputable survey of 30,000 high school students across the country reveals that a third of them have stolen something from a store in the past year.
And the list goes on. Example after example of dishonest acts involving both the famous and the nameless. Of course, it is not a new phenomenon. Dishonesty is as old as man, and yet, it seems to be more encompassing than ever with hardly a day going by that we are not bombarded with news of people who are untrue to themselves and others.
We can only imagine what a gift it would be if every person in this increasingly complex and chaotic world would take a renewed vow to earnestly strive to be more honest in their personal behavior.
