ST. GEORGE — A firefighter was injured Wednesday morning after the brakes reportedly failed on a vintage fire engine, resulting in a crash on Desert Canyon Parkway in St. George.

Shortly after 11 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to Desert Canyon Parkway near the corner of Desert Edge Drive, located approximately 3 miles south of the St. George Regional Airport.

The crash involved a 1948 Ahrens Fox fire engine and a red Ford SUV. When responders arrived, they found the driver of the fire engine injured, Washington County Sheriff's Office deputy Graham Hancock told St. George News.

The firefighter was transported to St. George Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment, while the occupants in the SUV reported no injuries at the scene.

The investigation was turned over to the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Utah Highway Patrol since an independent investigation is typically conducted when a crash involves a city vehicle, in this case, a fire engine.

At the time of the crash, Hancock said, the fire engine started experiencing brake issues, so the driver was in the process of turning around to head back to Fire Station 10, which was showcasing several fire engines during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held the day before.
