ST GEORGE — Two Southern California men were arrested last week after the search of a motel room in St. George led officers to an alleged forgery operation, including an altered $103,000 check that was reportedly cashed, police say.
The arrests stem from an incident reported on the afternoon of Sept. 20, when officers were dispatched to a report alleging the discovery of a large amount of marijuana in one of the unoccupied rooms.
Officers arrived to learn that a large bag of suspected marijuana had been found in one of the rooms, along with several hundred dollars in cash on the nightstand.
Officers received no answer when they knocked on the door to the room, which was when they reportedly detected "a strong odor" of marijuana near the door, the officer noted in the report.
Officers also learned the room was rented by a man driving a red Jeep Grand Cherokee and were provided a copy of his driver's license.
In the parking lot, officers noticed the Jeep carrying three occupants pull into the parking lot, and then they recognized the driver as the same individual who rented the room.
