LAKE POINT, Tooele County — A woman was killed in a head-on crash in Tooele County on Tuesday afternoon.
An SUV was on the ramp to west I-80 near Lake Point when the driver crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a pickup truck, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Luis Silva.
The 69-year-old woman driving the SUV suffered fatal injuries, UHP said. She was identified Thursday as Sherrie Ivie, from Grantsville.
The 61-year-old pickup truck driver was flown to a hospital in critical condition.
A bystander told KSL he heard the impact, saw car parts flying and got out to check on everyone. The bystander saw the truck driver was injured, and the truck had caught on fire.
The bystander flagged down a dump truck driver, asked for an extinguisher and kept the flames at bay while another man helped get the driver out of the truck. UHP said the bystanders' actions and the truck driver wearing a seat belt likely saved the driver's life.
The freeway ramps in the area were closed while emergency officials responded to the scene.
