SALT LAKE CITY — "Hamilton" is about to make its much-anticipated return to Utah and while there are some tickets still available for its 40-show run in the Beehive State, tickets are going fast.

However, there's another way for the young, scrappy and hungry looking to not throw away their shot to see the smash hit Broadway musical at a massive discount.

The show's producers will hold a series of lotteries for $10 tickets — yes, an Alexander Hamilton — for performances at Eccles Theater. The first lottery opened at 10 a.m. Friday on the Hamilton app and it remains open until noon on Thursday, July 25, before the first winners are announced later in the day.

Here's how it works. People can sign up for the "Hamilton" lottery on the app without making any purchases. Winners will be notified via the app and email between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday for the upcoming week of performances, which — in the case of the first lottery — begin on July 31.

Once notified, winners will have two hours to purchase their tickets. Every winner can purchase up to two tickets for $10 each. The tickets can be picked up at the Eccles Theater will-call up to two hours before the show as long as the winner presents a valid form of photo identification.

Similar lotteries will take place every Friday through Thursday ahead of additional weeks before the production wraps up its latest Salt Lake City stint on Sept. 1.

There are a few additional key rules, though:

  • You must be at least 18 years old with a "valid, nonexpired photo ID" that matches the entry name to participate in the lottery.
  • Only one entry is permitted per person. Any repeat entries or disposable email addresses will be tossed.
  • Lottery tickets are nontransferable. Tickets that are resold are considered void.
  • Drawing tickets cannot be combined with other offers or promotions. There are also no refunds or exchanges allowed.
  • Drawings may also be "revoked or modified at any time without notice."

"Hamilton," which won 11 Tony Awards in 2016 for its initial run on Broadway, debuted in Utah with sold-out performances in 2018. It also made a run in 2020, which — combined — generated about an estimated $75 million into the local economy, according to Victor Hamburger, vice president of Mountain for Broadway Across America.

The upcoming shows were announced in February 2023, when the 2023-24 Broadway at the Eccles schedule was released.

"Utahns have embraced this show like no other, and we can't wait for 'Hamilton' to return as Broadway continues to be an important economic engine for downtown Salt Lake City," Hamburger said last year.
