SALT LAKE CITY — A car crashed into a bridge support column on I-80 and caught fire, killing its driver early Saturday, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
The vehicle left the roadway on the I-80 westbound ramp headed toward the Salt Lake City International Airport about 3:18 a.m. and struck a column supporting the overpass crossing above, UHP Cpl. Mike Alexander said.
State troopers and firefighters arrived on scene to find the vehicle burning, according to a press release.
"The vehicle became fully engulfed, and fire personnel responded to put the fire out," Alexander said. "At that time, they found the driver who suffered fatal injuries still inside the vehicle."
There are still visible scorch marks on the bridge. No information has been released about the victim.
