There are so many things pleading for our time. The expectations of writing Christmas cards, buying toys for the kids, baking holiday goodies, and decorating the house can be overwhelming. Putting the swing set together and finishing last minute projects only multiply the pressure. Is there a way to reduce the stress of the season?

In my coaching practice, I see that much of the holiday stress comes from strained finances. I am concerned that we are creating a holiday that is about consumerism. At Christmas time, is the focus on buying and consuming? Your best childhood memories probably did not involve the consumption of gifts. What does it take to give your children the same types of memories? Creating meaningful Christmas memories usually come from turning outward and finding ways to help others and give to those in need. Families joining together for a service project can be a lasting tradition that brings not only great family memories, but also a closer family relationship.

Tools to relive holiday stress:

• Make a budget - Under commit on your budget and stick to it.

• Count your blessings - There are so many people worse off than you. Take time with your family to identifying the things you are grateful to have.

• Take ownership of your choices and responsibilities - Many people are stressed because thy feel like they HAVE to do certain things. Remember, you are a force in your own life. If you don't like how something is going, change it.

• Prioritize yourself and your activities - It is easy to say no when you know what your yes's are. You may end up doing things you don't want to because you're not clear about what is important to you.

• Don't over schedule yourself - Find time for yourself during the season.

• SERVE, SERVE, SERVE

Don't wait for everyone else to make it a great season, go out and make it the best Christmas season you can.
