Jed Boal ReportingA Salt Lake neighborhood known for its enigmatic flare got a face-lift that seems to suit it just fine.
9th and 9th is a neighborhood with a mix of old and new, franchised and locally owned, loyal long-timers and new fans. Now the intersection has a look that's unlike any other neighborhood in town.
Maroon lampposts, green benches, and a circle at the center of the intersection with sunbursts and a splash of color in the pavement. It's all part of the 1.8 million dollars pumped into improvements at the intersection of 900 East 900 South during the summer.
Rhett Barney, Long-time Neighborhood Resident: "I think it's incredible. It's funky and fu. This is an arty-farty neighborhood, so it's great for this neighborhood."
Rhett Barney has lived and worked in the neighborhood 25 years. He says the Coffee Garden is humming again after a move from across the street.
Rhett Barney, Long-time Neighborhood Resident: "I think if there's anybody eclectic or bohemian in this city.. It's like a magnet that attracts all those people."
An artist consulted on the project and helped narrow down choices. Property owners will kick in nearly a half-million dollars over a decade. The city paid for the infrastructure; the property owners paid for the frills. But the people say the vibe is all about the people.
J.C. Chavez, Neighborhood Resident: "Unique. Everybody's different. Very relaxed atmosphere."
One store manager says construction slowed business in the summer; but the neighborhood is returning to its normal pace.
Ryan Malone, Store Manager: "I've always liked it for years, that's why I got a job here. I live up the street. It's the whole community idea."
The city still has a few odds and ends to finish off.
