SALT LAKE CITY — Eleven people in Utah are infected with salmonella that has been linked to a nationwide outbreak involving recalled cantaloupe.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services said it identified 11 people in the state infected with the disease, ranging from 2 to 83 years old. Five of the patients had to be hospitalized, the department said on social media.

Several brands of cantaloupe have been recalled in connection with the outbreak, including Malichita and Rudy. Since November, 302 people across 42 states have been infected with salmonella, including four who died.

U.S. health officials advised consumers on Nov. 30 to not eat pre-cut cantaloupe if they don't know the source.

"Rinsing recalled cantaloupes does not make them safe to eat. If your cantaloupe is part of the recall or if you don't know the brand, throw it out," the Utah health department said.
