PLEASANT GROVE — A vehicle collided into the side of an apartment building in Pleasant Grove on Monday morning, pinning an occupant of the unit inside and injuring both him and the driver.

Pleasant Grove police said a man experienced a "sudden medical condition that rendered him unconscious behind the wheel of his pickup truck." His car left the roadway at a high rate of speed, slamming into an unoccupied vehicle and crashing into some town houses, police said.

"It finally came to a stop inside the living room of the last town house," police said on social media Monday afternoon.

Video taken at the scene shows what appears to be a pickup truck jutting out of the side of the building, with white and black smoke filling the air. The collision occurred near 1116 W. 100 South in Pleasant Grove.

The truck was still running and spinning its tires when firefighters arrived. The truck driver was transported to the hospital via ambulance for "bleeding wounds," police said.

"(We) came around the corner and saw the smoke and the truck still running and people were all over the place running from the building," said Jake Larsen, Pleasant Grove fire battalion chief.

A man living in an adjacent apartment escaped the building on his own and told firefighters his friend was still inside the building. Firefighters located the friend, who had been pinned on the first floor of the building, and flew him to a hospital, Larsen said.

Police said the man who was pinned was in his early 20s. He suffered broken bones and internal bleeding, but underwent surgery and is expected to survive, police said.

The crash is still under investigation, but "it appears to be a freak accident caused by the sudden onset of an unknown medical condition," police said.
