SANDY — A male injured in an officer-involved shooting in Sandy on Thursday has died, police confirmed Friday.
Sandy police have also confirmed the suspect was a 16-year-old boy.
On Thursday, Sandy police officers spotted a stolen vehicle and followed the car from a distance until the driver apparently spotted them and tried to get away. At 9000 S. Monroe Street (250 West), an officer "challenged" the driver, said Sandy Police Sgt. Greg Moffitt. The driver was able to turn the stolen vehicle around, but hit a motorcycle in the process.
The rider, a male, who is not a police officer, was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries. On Friday, police stated that he is "stable" but still in the hospital.
As the driver continued to flee, he drove onto a dead-end road near 150 West, Moffitt said. At that point, there was some type of confrontation and shots were fired, Moffitt said. Police have not said what prompted the officer to shoot.
The 16-year-old boy driver was taken to a local hospital where he died Thursday night, according to police. The boy's name has not been released.
One Sandy police officer has been placed on standard paid administrative leave as the officer-involved shooting is investigated by an outside protocol team.
