SANDY — One man was taken to a local hospital after allegedly being involved in an officer-involved shooting in Sandy on Thursday. A second man, a bystander, was injured in a crash.
The incident began about 11:45 a.m. when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers located that vehicle and determined it was stolen, said Sandy Police Sgt. Greg Moffitt. Officers then followed the vehicle from a distance without using emergency lights or sirens.
At some point, the driver noticed he was being followed and increased his speed, Moffitt said. Officers did not initiate a pursuit at that time, but continued to follow from a distance.
A short time later, an officer at 9000 S. Monroe Street (250 West) encountered the vehicle and "challenged" the driver, Moffitt said. The driver was able to turn the stolen vehicle around, but hit a motorcycle in the process. The rider, a male, who is not a police officer, was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
As the driver continued to try and flee, he drove onto a dead end road near 150 West, Moffitt said. At that point, there was some type of confrontation and shots were fired, Moffitt said. The driver of the stolen vehicle was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
