ST. GEORGE — A Washington County woman pleaded guilty to wire fraud and false statement on a tax return Thursday after prosecutors say she embezzled more than $232,000 as an HOA treasurer.
Former Lava Bluff HOA treasurer Sharon Lee Ann Gordon, 66, of Hurricane, diverted funds from four HOA members' bank accounts to her personal bank account between 2016 and March 2022, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office of Utah. Prosecutors say Gordon wrote checks to herself and her boyfriend, forging other board members' signatures.
She also electronically filed an income tax form with the IRS in April 2022 saying her income was only $13,502, when it was at least $20,000 more, according to the statement.
Gordon was ordered to pay $20,490 in restitution to the IRS for unreported income between 2017 and 2021, in addition to repaying the rest of the $232,000. As of Thursday, she had paid the HOA $168,629.68 in restitution so far, according to the statement.
She will be sentenced at a later date in St. George before a U.S. District Court judge.
