OREM — Lone Peak senior and Kansas commit Zoey Burgess has never finished a high school volleyball season without a state title, and on Saturday she made sure she never will by securing a 3-1 win over first-seeded Skyridge.
Burgess and the second-seeded Knights entered the UCCU Center Saturday like they had been there before, shaking off a close 25-18 first-set loss to rattle off a delayed sweep with three straight wins to complete a rare four-peat in Utah 6A girls volleyball.
Skyridge handed the Knights their first set loss of the postseason in the opening set with an 8-1 closing run. The second set was tied almost the entire way before Lone Peak eeked out the win 25-23 on a Skyridge service error.
Fellow senior Devyn Nifo helped the Knights get out to a 7-0 lead in the third set with a service ace, and Lone Peak kept its distance to go up 2-1 on a 25-16 third-set win. The fourth set was tied 10-10 before the Knights' championship experience shined through with a 6-0 run.
Burgess got a pair of kills to go up 17-11 and 22-16 before winning the game with her final high school kill to make it 25-18 and go 4-for-4 in state title games over her four years at Lone Peak.
