ST. GEORGE — Two children were killed and their father was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon, according to police.
A black sedan was traveling south on Dixie Drive about 5:18 p.m. Sunday when it crossed into northbound lanes and struck a metal power pole on the side of the road, St. George police said in a news release.
Witnesses saw two "severely injured children in the back seat and immediately took action by breaking windows to get the children out," the release states. They began lifesaving measures, but the two boys, aged 4 and 9, died from their injuries.
The driver and father of the boys, a 36-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and remained in the intensive care unit as of Monday afternoon, police said.
The incident is still under investigation, but police said speed and impairment "appear to be major contributing factors."
"We mourn the loss of these two young children in such a tragic accident and we offer our condolences to the family, first responders, witnesses and hospital staff," the police department said. "Those who assisted made every effort to provide lifesaving measures to both young boys, and we appreciate those efforts."
Police have not yet released the boys' identities, but a GoFundMe account* identifies them as Anthony and Emilio of the Romero family.
"These two children lit up everyone's world that would walk in it, we would appreciate any donations to help the Romero family at this time with the funeral expenses and hospital expenses," the account states.
