FARMINGTON — The Utah Department of Corrections is changing its policies on releasing prisoners from county jails after the Davis County Jail mistakenly let an inmate out on parole.

Joseph Armijo, 34, was released from the Davis County Jail to his mother on Sept. 26, the date he was originally scheduled to be paroled, according to a statement from the Utah Department of Corrections.

But earlier that week, the Board of Pardons and Parole had rescinded his parole because of a disciplinary violation. The Utah Department of Corrections told Armijo and his family about the decision — but did not alert officials at the Davis County Jail.

"Prior to his release, Davis County did not compare their release list with the official list from (Utah Department of Corrections)," according to the statement. "The culmination of these actions resulted in Armijo's mistaken release from custody."

Armijo, who was jailed for a nonviolent allegation, was taken back into custody without incident and has been moved to the Utah State Correctional Facility, according to the statement.

The department temporarily suspended releases from county jails during this investigation, and is now changing its process to require written notification to jails if there is any status change in an inmate's release status or eligibility for parole.
