SALT LAKE CITY — Two men are facing multiple felony charges accusing them of shooting at two apartments in Salt Lake City.
And investigators believe the two can also be tied to a second shooting less than a week later.
Angel Daniel Canal-Lepe, of Kearns, and Phillip Ray Cordova, of West Valley City, both 18, were each charged Monday in 3rd District Court with six counts of aggravated assault and 14 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, both third-degree felonies.
Tuesday afternoon, Canal-Lepe was charged with an additional six counts of discharge of a firearm and two counts of aggravated assault, third-degree felonies, for allegedly shooting at a car on Sept. 27.
Both men were arrested Friday following a lengthy standoff with the Unified Police Department's SWAT officers at 4351 W. 5780 South.
On Sept. 24, police say Canal-Lepe was accused of touching a girl inappropriately. A man who confronted Canal-Lepe about the allegations tried to detain him for police. Canal-Lepe, however, was able to message Cordova who showed up at the apartment complex, near 1850 West and 1450 North, a short time later and began shooting into the involved apartment, according to charging documents.
Police found 14 bullet holes in the front door of one apartment and two more in a neighboring apartment, the charges state.
When the shooting started, the man who had detained Canal-Lepe ran to the front of his apartment to see what was happening. Canal-Lepe and Cordova then started chasing the man who ran to the back door, the charges say. Three shots were fired into the back door. Police say the man being chased at one point pulled out his own gun and returned fire. No injuries were reported.
Three days later, on Sept. 27, Unified police believe both men were near 4220 W. 5500 South when a car drove by with people inside whom they recognized, and the men fired six rounds at the vehicle, according to a police booking affidavit. No injuries were reported.
Police say both men are documented gang members and "Angel has an extensive criminal history involving violent incidents," the affidavit states.
