HURRICANE — After suffering a tough loss a week ago, the Snow Canyon football team came out firing on all cylinders Friday night.
With a strong offensive effort, Snow Canyon defeated Hurricane 42-14.
The Warriors threw the first punch as quarterback Talan Kelly connected with Cael Johnson for a touchdown less than 30 seconds into the game. Snow Canyon had another opportunity two minutes later when Kelly threw a pass into the end zone, only for it to be intercepted by the Tigers' Austyn McRoberts.
The Tigers were unable to score off the turnover, though.
The Warriors made the score 14-0 after a receiving touchdown by Archie Threlfall to push the strong start. Hurricane didn't end the quarter quietly, though, as Dylyn Gabriel threw to McRoberts for the Tigers' first score of the game.
The second quarter was nearly identical to the first, this time with a Johnson touchdown just 13 seconds in. That gave Johnson his first multi-touchdown game of his varsity career.
"It felt good to get more than one touchdown," Johnson said. "But now we have to get ready for Desert Hills."
It was not long before Kelly threw another touchdown, hitting Konrad Green for the fourth Warriors score of the game. Gabriel and McRoberts connected for the Tigers just before halftime to bring the score to 28-14.
But Snow Canyon kept Hurricane scoreless in the second half, while putting up two more touchdowns of their own.
Midway through the third quarter, Trey Vaughn intercepted a pass from Gabriel and ran nearly the entire length of the field for a pick-six score. Snow Canyon's offensive showing was capped off with a rushing touchdown from Kelly.
Neither team allowed a score for the entirety of the fourth quarter.
"Anytime you can come right back after a loss and win and get back on track, it's a good thing," Warriors head coach Michael Esplin said.
Snow Canyon now stands at 5-2 on the season, while Hurricane drops to 1-6. Both will stay in southern Utah next week as Snow Canyon travels to Desert Hills, and Hurricane will host Crimson Cliffs.
