SANDY — Sandy police have confirmed that two 16-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with a shooting in a church parking lot that left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

About 5 p.m. on Aug. 28, officers responded to a church parking lot, 8825 S. Monroe Street, on the report of a shooting. They arrived to find a man in his 30s who had been shot twice and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was later listed as "stable," according to police.

Detectives began looking for a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with at least two occupants. Witnesses told investigators that a passenger had fired multiple rounds, according to a search warrant affidavit. Detectives collected surveillance video from the area and were able to get more information about the Jeep.

The vehicle was found on Aug. 30 in the Jordan High School parking lot, according to police. Investigators seized the Jeep and impounded it. Based on evidence collected at the school, a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody.

Police also learned the identity of a second person who they say was in the Jeep at the time of the shooting — another 16-year-old boy — and he had been picked up by Taylorsville police two days later after running away from a stolen vehicle, the affidavit states.

Police say both boys are documented gang members. A possible motive for the shooting had not been released as of Tuesday.
