WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was arrested Monday and accused of firing numerous rounds during a large confrontation outside a West Valley convenience store three weeks ago, causing minor injuries to several people.
Manuel Ismael Torres, 18, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of 20 counts of discharge of a firearm.
About 1:50 a.m. on March 21, police say there was a "large physical altercation" outside Charlie's Market, 5556 W. 2455 South. During the confrontation, a man was seen in surveillance video "shooting 20 rounds into a crowd of people. Twenty casings were recovered on scene," according to a police booking affidavit.
West Valley police said Torres appeared to have shot low to the ground rather than directly at the crowd. Several people were treated for minor injuries that police believe may have been caused by shrapnel.
About 2:30 a.m., Torres called another person "and confessed to the shooting," the affidavit alleges.
Torres was arrested Wednesday evening. Additional details on how police found him were not immediately available.
