OGDEN — Almost seven years after a toddler was killed in Roy, a 28-year-old man has been ordered to spend at least 25 years and up to life in prison for her murder.
Jordan Koji Ramirez-Sasaki was sentenced in Ogden's 2nd District Court on Tuesday for the 2016 murder of Genesis McCall. Judge Noel Hyde recommended he receive credit for 586 days already served.
Genesis was at least a year old. Official documents have conflicting reports about exactly how many months old she was.
Ramirez-Sasaki pleaded guilty July 11 to aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, as part of a plea deal. In exchange for his plea, a charge of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony, was dismissed.
On Oct. 12, 2016, Roy police were dispatched to a home at 4995 S. 3100 West where Genesis was reported to be breathing abnormally and unconscious, per an arrest warrant. Ramirez-Sasaki, who was dating Genesis's mother, was babysitting Genesis and her 3-year-old brother while their mother was at work, per the warrant. Ramirez-Sasaki told police Genesis had fallen the day before but acted normal after falling.
Genesis was taken to Primary Children's Hospital via helicopter, where doctors declared her to be brain dead. Doctors told police Genesis's injuries included detached retinas; bleeding and swelling in the brain; bruises on her head, upper body and butt; and injuries to her neck consistent with strangulation.
After Genesis was removed from life support, the medical examiner reported multiple blunt force injuries to her head, neck and torso.
"The clinical and autopsy findings were ruled consistent with inflicted injury and the manner of death was listed as homicide," the warrant says. But at the time, proof tying the murder to Ramirez-Sasaki was inconclusive, and laboratory testing and forensic analysis were ongoing, police said.
In April 2020, Ramirez-Sasaki's ex-wife told police he had confessed to killing Genesis. Two subsequent girlfriends also told police he had confessed to the murder. Ramirez-Sasaki also told all three women that if police tried to contact him he would have a shootout with them, the arrest warrant says.
It took investigators until January 2022 to gather enough evidence to arrest Ramirez-Sasaki for the crime.
