SALT LAKE CITY — Police on Wednesday identified a man who died after being hit by a car Tuesday morning.

Salt Lake City police said 56-year-old Joseph Montanino died as a result of the crash.

The crash happened near 561 W. 200 South at the entrance to the parking garage of an apartment building. Police took a 911 call at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday from a driver who reported they had hit a pedestrian.

Salt Lake fire paramedics took Montanino to the hospital where he later died.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police detectives believe Montanino was sleeping on the ground against the parking garage door, when the garage door opened and the driver hit him.

"There is no evidence to suggest this was an intentional crash. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation," police said in a statement Tuesday.

No additional details about the crash were provided Wednesday. The crash marks the 15th traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City this year.
