FARMINGTON — Tyson Shelley's summer of fun has spearheaded a strong run for the BYU men's golf program across amateur golf.
And it continues through the weekend.
The former Skyline High star who will be a junior at BYU in the fall shot a second consecutive 65 for a two-day total of 12-under-par 130, tied for seventh after 36 holes on the Korn Ferry Tour's event at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington where his family are members.
"I've played here for years now," Shelley said. "It's really familiar, and I love playing here."
Shelley, who won the prestigious Pacific Coast Amateur in a playoff a week ago, qualified Monday for his first Korn Ferry Tour event alongside BYU teammate Zac Jones. Last year's Utah state amateur champion has had his own strong summer, as well, but missed the cut 2-under 140.
Oh, and the program added Cal transfer Simon Kwon, who, like Shelley, is a Skyline High alum and won the state amateur at Salt Lake Country Club earlier this summer.
"I think it's been a very successful summer for BYU," said Shelley, who will tee off Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MDT with first-round leader Tim Widing. "We're looking forward to going into this season after this summer; I feel like everybody has played really great. We're all excited to go into the season and just kind of carry our momentum there."
Shelley was two shots off the lead, which is shared by Kevin Dougherty, Shad Tuten and Christopher Petefish after 36 holes. Dougherty and Tuten entered the weekend in the Korn Ferry Tour's top 25 on the points list, while Petefish has been more of a surprise, though he's still a top-100 golfer.

Ross Steelman, Jake Knapp and Pierceson Coody were tied for fourth at 13-under 129.
Former BYU golfer Carson Lundell, who made his Korn Ferry Tour debut earlier this summer in Colorado, also made the cut at 10-under 175. The Lone Peak product followed up Thursday's opening round 64 with five birdies en route to 68 and sits tied for 19th Saturday before teeing off at 1 p.m. MDT.
Former Utah golfer Mitchell Schow, who won the 2020 state amateur, shot 66-68 after finishing his first round early Friday morning due to weather delays to make the cut. The Ogden native who prepped at Park City will tee off the third round at 11:50 a.m. MDT.
Four Utah golfers did not make the cut after 36 holes, including former BYU golfer Patrick Fishburn. The Fremont High alum entered the tournament as strong as anyone on the Korn Ferry Tour, with a runner-up finish at the NV5 Invitational that vaulted him to No. 15 on the tour's projected points list but missed the 6-under-par cut by one stroke.
The top-30 golfers at the end of the season automatically clinch a PGA Tour card for the upcoming season. Fishburn is currently projected to drop to 17th after his missed cut.
Former BYU golfer Daniel Summerhays shot 70-71 to finish at 1-under 141.
Former Utah golfer Blake Tomlinson, who also prepped at Skyline and finished runner-up twice at the state amateur, shot even-par 142.
