BULLFROG BASIN, Kane County — A man from Ohio died in a cliff-jumping accident at Lake Powell Thursday.

Kane County Sheriff's Office said the dispatch center received a report of a possible fatality 0.25 miles south of Buoy 89 on Lake Powell at 11:43 a.m. Thursday. The incident occurred in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 89 miles from the Glen Canyon Dam.

Witnesses reported a man jumped off a cliff about 50 feet tall and failed to resurface. Glen Canyon rangers, Kane County sheriff's deputies and Utah Department of Natural Resources officers started searching for the man after arriving at the scene.

On Friday at 10:20 a.m., the Utah Department of Public Safety's dive team used a sonar scan to locate the victim and divers recovered his body, which was found about 30 feet underwater.

The man was identified as Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender, 36, of Cincinnati. His body was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City and the incident is being investigated.

A statement from Kane County Sheriff's Office reminded people who recreate at Lake Powell that it is prohibited to jump or dive off rock cliffs, ledges, or man-made structures (excluding vessels) from a height of 15 feet or more above the water.
