SPANISH FORK — A fatal crash in Spanish Fork Canyon closed U.S. 6 in both directions for several hours Monday before it reopened.
The crash occurred about 15 miles into the canyon near the Red Narrows. A westbound car crossed over into the eastbound lanes and hit a pickup truck head-on, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden said the driver of the westbound car was declared dead on the scene, and the driver of the pickup truck was being transported to a hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no other occupants in either car.
The Utah Department of Transportation said to expect major delays in the area during the closure and advised drivers to use alternate routes.
Roden said the crash was mostly blocking the eastbound side, so crews worked to get westbound lanes cleared and open for traffic. One lane opened at 6:15 p.m. for alternating traffic, and all lanes reopened at 7 p.m., the Utah Department of Transportation said.
Just a few miles away at the junction that connects U.S. 6 to U.S. 89, the road is closed from Thistle to Fairview due to flooding.
