OREM — A man was arrested Wednesday after police said he brought a knife to Orem Junior High School while under the influence of drugs.
Officers were called to the area of 750 North and 550 West about 7 a.m. following the report of a "suspicious" man who had tried to enter a home, Orem police said in a statement. The homeowner repeatedly told the man to leave the property.
Officers were on their way to the house when an Orem Junior High School employee reported that a man had entered the school with a knife. The employee successfully talked the man into giving him the knife and then going into an office, police said. The man left the office before police could arrive.
School had not started yet, and students who were en route were diverted to another building while the school was locked down.
Officers found the man hiding in a school closet, police said. He was asked to step out of the closet and failed to comply at first. The man was taken into custody and is suspected of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, police said.
Alavaro Martinez was booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, criminal trespass on school property, criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance, intoxication and obstruction of justice.
No one was harmed during the incident, police said, and school resumed as usual following the investigation.
