SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) -- The South Salt Lake City Council has added an ambulance program to its fire department and authorized the city fire chief to apply for a state license.
But the council, which approved the move in a 4-3 vote earlier this week, hasn't approved funding yet.
The city currently uses a private contractor, Gold Cross, as its primary 911 ambulance provider.
The city ambulance service would cost about $1.1 million in startup costs, but fire officials say the service would shorten response times and improve patient care.
