SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Park officials are trying to keep the lights on at Timpanogos Cave National Monument.
Monument managers in the Wasatch Mountains are proposing a new electrical line that would feed power to its network of caves.
The existing system has not always been reliable. Superintendent Denis Davis says sometimes the power goes out in the caves, leaving rangers to lead tourists out using only flashlights.
The new 2,200-foot-long power line would run from an old quarry up to the caves, a vertical rise of about 1,100 feet.
The National Park Service is preparing an environmental analysis of the project.
The 250-acre monument, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, has about 110,000 visitors per year.
