SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot late Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The suspected gunman, the woman's brother who is also her neighbor, was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say.

The investigation began about 11:45 p.m. when police were notified by a local hospital of a 57-year-old woman who had been shot, said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg. Doctors initially stated that the woman was in life-threatening condition, but by midday Friday she was "stable."

A family member arrived at the woman's duplex and found her on the ground bleeding.

"The family member called 911 for a medical response, including Gold Cross and Salt Lake City fire. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital. The initial on-scene medical response did not suggest anything criminal in nature," police said.

But after learning that the woman had been shot, police went back to the duplex in the 1100 block of Lake Street (750 East) to look for evidence and make sure no one else was injured, Weisberg said. Officers also interviewed family members and learned the woman and her brother, who lived in the other half of the duplex, had had disagreements in the past, he said.

Detectives further learned that the brother "had potential information about the woman's injury and may have been the suspect," police said.

Multiple attempts were made to contact the brother, but police received no response.

About 8:30 a.m. Friday, a search warrant was obtained by a SWAT team to enter the duplex. Inside, they found the body of the deceased brother.

The name of the 72-year-old man has not yet been released.
