SALT LAKE CITY — President Russell M. Nelson, prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared a Christmas message Sunday telling of the light of Jesus Christ and inviting others to share in that light through service.

As part of the church's Light the World campaign, the video was released a week before Christmas in an effort to encourage others to serve one another during this Christmas season.

President Nelson shared key parts of the classic Christmas story, relaying elements of Christ's birth. The best way to celebrate Christ's birth, he said, is by joining in the light of Christ and serving one another.

"As we commemorate the birth of him who is the light of the world, new light is kindled in each of us," President Nelson said in the video published Sunday. "Today, we need his light — the light of Jesus Christ — more than ever. We need men and women who reflect His light by being peacemakers willing to reason with others rather than to contend with them. … As we follow Jesus Christ, we can make this a better world."

He emphasized the increasing need for service, light and love in the world today, and encouraged emulating Christ's example. President Nelson expressed gratitude for the life of service of Christ.

He ended the video message by sharing his testimony of the validity of Christ and expressing gratitude for those who choose to serve.

The Light the World campaign encourages people around the globe to share kindness with one another. To find out more or to join in sharing light around the world, visit lighttheworld.org.
