West Jordan is as surprised as everyone else with Kraftmaid's announcement that it is laying off 500 employees.
West Jordan City Hall got no advance warning that the layoffs were coming.
Economic Development Director Tom Burdett said, "It's a sad day. Obviously the loss of jobs has an effect on the local community."
He says Kraftmaid promises to resume making cabinets if the construction industry bounces back. But he doesn't know when that day will come. "None of our larger manufacturing companies have indicated that they are shutting down," he said.
He says the company will keep 10 people on the staff to provide security at the empty plant.
