DENVER (AP) -- A Utah hunting guide has been sentenced to one year in prison and three years probation after pleading guilty to a poaching charge in Colorado.
Eric Leon Butt Jr. of Herriman, Utah, learned his sentence Wednesday in a Denver federal courtroom. He pleaded guilty in February to conspiring to sell illegally killed wildlife across state lines.
Prosecutors said Butt encouraged clients to shoot deer and bear without a license in southwestern Colorado. He would then go to a co-defendant to mount the animals and ship them out of state.
Butt was accused of illegally killing four elk, two black bears and two mule deer over four years.
The co-defendant, Paul Ray Weyand of Cortez, pleaded guilty to three counts in March and is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 30.
