SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously voted to appoint Martin Bates as interim superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District.
Bates has worked in education for more than 30 years. He most recently served as superintendent of Granite School District, before retiring in 2021. Bates will serve as interim superintendent while the board seeks to find a permanent replacement for Timothy Gadson III, who resigned last month.
Gadson, who became the first Black educator to lead a school district in Utah, stepped down after he was placed on administrative leave and went through a mediation process with the school board. He will continue to serve as a consultant for the district through the remainder of his contract.
