MAGNA — If there were any doubts in No. 14 Riverton after a close loss last week, the Silverwolves put them to rest quickly in a non-region visit to Cyprus.

Riverton scored on its first drive and didn't look back en route to a 56-6 win over Cyprus. The win came in dominant fashion in all three facets of the game, including a blocked punt that was recovered for a special teams touchdown.

Riverton took advantage of sloppy offensive play by Cyprus, who had snap issues and had two fumbled snaps. Add to that favorable punt returns and Riverton started most drives around midfield or in Pirates territory, which allowed the Silverwolves' offense to score quickly and often. Riverton quarterback Jake Meyers threw for five touchdowns to four different receivers.

"I just feel like our team did a really good job responding." Riverton head coach Jody Morgan said. "There's a lot of great energy on the field. We started playing for each other and not as individuals, and you could see it in the way that we acted, the way that we dressed, the way that we were speaking to each other on the sidelines."

The Silverwolves were called for an unsportsmanline penalty near the end of the game when the players on the sidelines celebrated on the field after the team's final touchdown of the night. But Morgan said there wasn't any disrespect meant by his team's actions.

"It's no disrespect to the team that we were playing," he said. "We thought we respected the hell out of Cyprus, but we're excited for everybody getting in, you know. It doesn't matter who you are on your team, if you make a good play like all of us on the sidelines, we're supporting you. Man, it was awesome to watch good energy from our fans, our parents and our sideline. It was awesome."

For the Pirates, the game was a series of never-ending miscues, from snap issues and special teams, to drive-changing penalties and an inability to move the ball down the field. Cyprus' lone touchdown came from an inside quarterback rush by Skyler Armenta for a 5-yard score late in the third quarter. By then, though, the Pirates were already down by 49 points.

What's next

  • Riverton goes to 2-1 and gets a nice rebound win going into an away game at Springville next Friday.
  • Cyprus suffers its first loss of the year and drops to 2-1; they start region play at West next week.
