FLIPPING OUT — We've seen a lot of crossover in sports, especially high school athletics, from two-sport athletes in football and basketball to three-sport stars that also play their field on the baseball diamond.

Some NFL players have even taken up dance and ballet to improve their footwork and overall athleticism.

But if football doesn't work out for Orem tight end Cole Johnson, he might have a career in gymnastics.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior had the play of the game for the Tigers in Friday night's season-opener against East, catching a 5-yard pass from quarterback Lance Reynolds to score the game-winning touchdown by flipping over a defender and into the end zone.

On the next play, Orem elected to go for the two-point conversion and Asher Young scored to lift the Tigers to a 22-21 win and the 1-0 start to the season.

But it was Johnson's head-over-heels final play on offense that was the buzz of social media, as posted to MaxPreps' YouTube channel on the opening weekend of the high school football season in Utah.

The senior who also plays defensive end is a two-sport athlete himself, after playing forward for the Tigers' basketball team last year.

Orem is back home to host Las Vegas' Desert Pines (Nev.) on Friday night. East travels to play at Skyridge, the top-ranked team in the Deseret News' coaches poll and the KSL.com Top 20+1.
