SALT LAKE CITY — A man who police say tried to solicit sex for an undercover officer's young "son" now faces criminal charges.
And police say the investigation into an alleged sex abuse incident involving a real child is continuing.
Coty Joseph Evans Shumway, 26, of Grantsville, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with criminal solicitation, a first-degree felony; and enticing a minor, a second-degree felony.
On Monday, Shumway contacted an agent with the Department of Homeland Security who was working with the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, according to charging documents. The agent was "conducting an undercover chat operation using various social media and dating applications," the charges state.
The undercover agent made a post that offered "sexual access to his 5-year-old son," according to the charges. Shumway responded and said he'd like to sexually assault the boy while he slept, the charges state.
Shumway and the agent made arrangements to meet. When Shumway arrived at the designated location, he was taken into custody, according to the charges. While being questioned by investigators, Shumway said he had also "committed hands-on sexual offenses against a 7-year-old boy," the charges state. That alleged incident remained under investigation Thursday.
Prosecutors have requested that Shumway remain in jail pending trial.
