OGDEN — Police say a man threw a shelving unit through a window at a deputy trying to bring him into custody on Wednesday, injuring the officer.

Slade Speechly, 47, was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of assault on a peace officer, assault, criminal trespass within a dwelling, carrying a dangerous weapon under the influence of alcohol or drugs, intoxication, interference with an arresting officer and criminal mischief.

Police say they responded to the home of Speechly's parents, who had "fled the home after Slade caused a disturbance," according to a police booking affidavit.

Speechly had been "removed from the home" last week after a disturbance, "due to his alcohol use," police said.

"Slade was intoxicated and caused a skin tear to his father's arm during the confrontation," the affidavit states.

Deputies arrived at the home and called out to Speechly, but police say he "refused to respond." One of his parents told officers a shotgun was unsecured in the basement, and an entry team led by a K-9 officer later "confirmed the shotgun was missing from the basement," police said.

"While awaiting SWAT, Slade observed a deputy outside of an exterior window of the room Slade had hidden in. After a brief altercation, Slade threw a shelving unit through the window at the deputy," the affidavit states.

The shelving unit "resulted in a substantial injury to (the officer), which required medical attention and sutures," police said.

The affidavit states that officers "converged" on Speechly and "had to use physical force to bring him into custody." Police said the missing shotgun was found within reach of where they brought Speechly into custody, and that it was fully loaded.

"He was transported to an area to be medically cleared. Except for a high level of alcohol in his system, nothing else of note was found in Slade's system at this time," police wrote in the affidavit.

While at the home, Speechly "disheveled several items." Police noted the fridge's freezer door had been ripped off, and Speechly had thrown multiple items, the affidavit states.
