CLINTON — A Clinton home is a total loss after coals the residents thought were cold started a fire.

Clinton Fire Chief David Olson said his department received a call just after 10 p.m. on July 10 about a structure fire at 1654 W. 600 North. They were joined by firefighters from North Davis, Syracuse and Hill Air Force Base fire departments.

Upon arrival, crews found the house engulfed in flames. The family and pets were evacuated and there were no injuries, but the estimated damage is $300,000. The roof collapsed and the home is a total loss, according to officials.

The family had been barbecuing earlier in the evening and thought their coals had cooled enough. Instead, the side of the house caught fire, Olson said.

It took crews 45 minutes to contain and put out the blaze, he said. The home's residents are being helped by family members in the area.

Olson urged people to not put used coals or discharged fireworks next to their homes, even when they think they pose no risk, as they can reignite.
