SALT LAKE CITY — A sexual assault investigation in Salt Lake City on Monday led to a SWAT team being called out and the discovery of a person dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, according to police.
The incident also prompted the lockdown of nearby Northwest Middle School, 1730 W. 1700 North, for about an hour.
Just before noon, police were called to a home near 1700 North Cavallo Drive after receiving information "about a sexual assault that had just occurred involving a juvenile. This was not a stranger-on-stranger assault," Salt Lake police said in a prepared statement. Police have not said who called 911.
Officers responding to the residence were informed that the alleged suspect had access to multiple guns, police stated. Just as officers arrived and attempted to make contact with someone in the garage, they heard what sounded like a gunshot, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Mark Wian.
Believing that other people were also inside the house, the SWAT team and a crisis negotiator were called. Northwest Middle School was also placed on lockdown as a precaution and neighbors were asked to shelter inside their homes.
By 1:10 p.m., SWAT officers entered the garage and located a deceased man who died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police. His name was not released.
The initial sexual assault call remained under investigation Monday.
