OGDEN — An Ogden man is in jail after he allegedly drove his car into two police vehicles on Sunday and nearly hit police officers in the process.

Christopher James Chesnut, 40, was arrested Sunday for investigation of assault against a peace officer, drug possession with intent to distribute, failing to stop at the command of law enforcement and aggravated assault.

On Sunday, Ogden Metro Gang Unit officers pulled over a car near 800 25th Street after a state system showed the car didn't have insurance, according to a police booking affidavit. The car drove into a parking lot before officers walked up to the vehicle.

Police talked with the car's owner, whom they identified as Chesnut. The driver allegedly would not give police his ID or insurance information. Chesnut was also holding a black satchel that "he kept pulling in close to his body as if to conceal it from us," police wrote in the affidavit.

Officers reported seeing that the car was not in park, and Chesnut allegedly shifted the car into reverse and backed up. An officer standing by the passenger side of the car said the car's front end swung toward him, causing him to step aside to avoid being hit.

The car drove backwards and hit a police car, causing "significant damage to the front end," the affidavit says. The car then drove forward and "nearly struck" two other officers before hitting another police car, which nearly "pinned (an officer) into a fence and dumpster," according to the affidavit. Police say the car also hit an occupied car in the parking lot before driving away and caused damage to the fence of a nearby business.

Police later found the car abandoned near 26th Street and Adams Avenue, and investigators reported finding a firearm under the driver seat.

Officers were later notified of Chesnut's possible location in the 500 block of Gramercy Avenue, where he was arrested. Officers searched the house's basement and found the satchel, which was empty. Police found two baggies, with one containing a "large amount of brown tar like substance" and the other with "brown tar like residue," the affidavit says.

Police also found two handgun magazines that "looked like the same type used by the handgun found in Chesnut's vehicle," according to the affidavit. Officers later searched Chesnut's home in the 700 block of 25th Street and reported that "two large bags were located containing vacuum sealed marijuana," along with sheets of dab marijuana and "a large amount" of money.
