WEST JORDAN — Both directions of 9000 South are closed Friday morning, from Bangerter Highway to 3400 West, due to a natural gas leak.

The leak was reported early Friday morning when construction crews in the area hit a major line around 2 a.m., according to the West Jordan Police Department.

After the leak was reported and crews began trying to fix it, a car crash also took place in the early morning hours, in the area along the southbound Bangerter on-ramp at 9000 South, according to a tweet from the Utah Department of Transportation. Emergency responders in the area quickly arrived at the crash scene.

West Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Kris Maxfield said three smaller gas lines feed in to the leaking gas line.

Jordan Valley Medical Center, just north of the gas leak, started diverting ambulance patients due to the difficulty of getting ambulances in the receiving bay, Maxfield said. All other hospital operations are continuing as normal.

Emergency crews are also monitoring the air at Salt Lake Community College, which is just south of the gas leak.
