SANDY — The mayor of Sandy took to social media on Monday to plead for information about three "suspicious" fires set in Dimple Dell Regional Park last week.

The fires were lit Wednesday between the dog park and 700 East, Mayor Monica Zoltanski said in a Facebook post.

"We're fortunate for the incredible work of the Sandy City Fire Department officers who responded quickly and put them out. But it's scary to see how much area burned, especially considering the ground was damp from fresh snow and rain the day before. Fire season is every season," Zoltanski said.

Photos from the fires' aftermath show areas of charred grass and trees that each appear to be several yards long.

The mayor noted that those who spend time at Dimple Dell "can't help but to be moved by its splendor and solitude," and said the community needs to take a "zero tolerance approach to anything that would jeopardize the nearby homes, people, wildlife, and habitat with fire, either intentional or careless."

She called the thought that someone might have set the fires deliberately "very troubling" and asked the community to assist police and the fire department in the investigation.

Those with information about the fires are asked to call 801-799-3000.
