SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police pulled over a wrong-way driver early Friday and to their surprise, found a 14-year-old boy behind the wheel.
Additionally, the minivan the boy was driving was determined to be stolen out of West Valley City.
The incident happened just before 2 a.m. on 500 South near 50 East, which is a one-way street. An officer spotted the vehicle going the wrong-way and pulled it over. When the officer approached the minivan, he found a 14-year-old driver and five other juveniles inside, said Salt Lake police officer Michael Ruff.
After discovering the vehicle was stolen and contacting the owners, police learned about $6,000 worth of property was also missing from the van, according to police. The investigation into what happened to the missing items was ongoing Friday. The teen driver was referred to Salt Lake Juvenile Detention.
It was unknown how long the teen had been driving the wrong way, though Ruff noted it isn't uncommon for motorists to turn eastbound onto 500 South in the downtown area not realizing it's a one-way street before quickly turning around.
